The Haruhi Suzumiya series whose anime adaptation was named after the first book, follows the main character, Kyon, our first person narrator recounting his adventures with the titular character, Haruhi.
The anime has two ways you can watch it. The airing order of watching in the order episodes aired, and the chronological order following the times of the shows events. In the latter the first six episodes cover book one.
At the beginning of the show we are introduced to Kyon, a boy who has long grown from believing in aliens, time travellers and espers, and haruhi who wants nothing more than those things to be real so she can make friends with them.
Haruhi at first has no friends as she refuses to associate with normal humans, but eventually takes a liking to Kyon due to the coincidence of being sat next to each other.
Haruhi on her own then decides to create her own club in order to find aliens. time travellers and espers. She convinces Kyon despite his reluctance and then recruits, Yuki Nagato, the single member of the literature club the invade, and then officially titles the club, The S.O.S Brigade.
The Spreading Excitement all over the World with Haruhi Suzumiya Brigade, or S.O.S then recruits Mikuru Asahina because Haruhi believe they need a moe member, and Itsuki Koizumi who transferred at a strange time and is thought mysterious by Haruhi. What they don’t yet realize is that each new member has a secret.
One at a time, each new member pull Kyon aside. Nagato reveals she is an artificial human created by the Data Integration Thought Entity, aka an alien created three years ago. Asahina reveals she is a time traveller from the future who can no longer travel past three years ago and koizumi is an esper who can only use his powers in specific conditions and received them three years ago.
Each of them proves themselves to Kyon by, defending him from a rouge alien, revealing there future selves and taking him to closed space where powers can be used, respectively. They all believe haruhi is god who created them subconsciously to kyons dismay.
The climax of the book/arc happens when Kyon Finds himself in a closed space espers cannot enter with only Haruhi, who is subconsciously trying to crate a new world with just Kyon. Kyon is only just able to convince haruhi to bring back the old world by using hints given to him by the other throughout the story and haruhi wakes up believing it was a dream ending the book.
